Home Health Care
You or a loved one may have an illness requiring at-home medical care and wonder if it is eligible for reimbursement. Common home healthcare services that are eligible for reimbursement are:
- Nursing Care (medication management, eating, bathing)
- Physical Therapy
- Occupational Therapy
- Medical Social Services
- Speech-Language Pathology
- Home Health Aides
The services do not need to be performed by a nurse but must be services generally performed by a nurse.
Sometimes, at-home service providers perform non-medical household tasks that are not eligible. These household tasks include cooking, cleaning, laundry, dishes and running errands.
Be sure to check with the home healthcare organization to understand the full scope of services to ensure they will be reimbursed.
When reviewing your invoice for reimbursement, we will need to see a detailed invoice stating the services you are receiving and the amount you are being billed. We also need to see the reason for home care.
If your invoice shows that ineligible services are being billed as part of the wages to the provider, then the amount paid to the provider must be divided between the time spent on nursing services. For example, you pay a provider $500 a week for medical and household services because of your medical condition. Your invoice shows twenty percent of the time is spent doing household chores such as washing dishes and laundry. You can include only $400 per week as medical expenses.
