There are many kinds of acne treatments and skincare products, so it may be challenging to know what’s eligible for reimbursement. The bottom line is that products designed to treat or prevent acne or products containing an SPF of 15+ are eligible. Products meant for hygienic or cosmetic purposes, such as moisturizers and anti-aging creams, are not eligible.
How do I know if a product is an eligible over-the-counter acne medicine?
The FDA states that acne treatments must declare that they “clear up,” “reduce the severity of,” “helps keep skin clear of new,” or “helps prevent new” acne, blackheads, or whiteheads. If a product only mentions moisturizing, skin appearance, or anti-aging effects, it likely isn’t eligible.
These medicines should also contain ingredients known to treat acne, such as salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, or sulfur. Some active ingredients may appear to be medical but are for cosmetic purposes; a common example is hyaluronic acid. These ingredients don’t indicate that a product is eligible.
Non-medicated face washes and cleansers also aren’t eligible. The IRS doesn’t allow the reimbursement of personal use items: “an item ordinarily used for personal, living, or family purposes (IRS Publication 502).”
Are homeopathic or all-natural acne products eligible?
Yes, even though these products don’t typically contain the ingredients listed above, they may also be eligible for reimbursement. The product must be primarily for treating medical conditions and can’t also have general health or wellness benefits. I have a skin condition and require skin moisturizers. Can I be reimbursed for them?
It depends. Some moisturizers contain active ingredients labeled skin protectants (such as colloidal oatmeal and zinc oxide) or treat eczema or psoriasis. Products like these are eligible. Other moisturizers used daily for individuals without medical conditions often require a doctor’s note. Any product that has anti-aging effects or only improves one’s appearance is not eligible for reimbursement.
Are lip balms eligible?
Only lip products with SPF 15+ or medicated lip products for cold sores are eligible for reimbursement. Most lip balms are for moisturizing and are not eligible.
I buy products with SPF in them. Is this eligible?
Yes, products with an SPF of at least 15 are eligible for reimbursement. Suntan lotions or products with less than 15 SPF are not.
Is aloe vera eligible?
Aloe vera moisturizes in addition to treating burns, so aloe vera gel and products containing it require a doctor’s note.
Are acne light therapy products eligible?
Yes, devices that provide UV light therapy to treat acne or pain relief are eligible. A product containing multiple UV spectrums that provide various cosmetic or relaxing benefits would only be eligible with a doctor’s note.
Is laser treatment for rosacea eligible?
Because these treatments are meant to improve one’s appearance and are cosmetic, you’ll need to provide a doctor’s note. The note must state that the treatment is necessary for treating a medical condition and isn’t for appearance or general wellness. Some laser treatments, such as those for acne, may be eligible without a note if the specific treatment has no cosmetic uses.
What kind of foot care products are eligible?
Chemical callus removers and files designed for removing corns and calluses are eligible. Pumice stones, foot files for maintenance, nail trimmers, and similar products are not.
